A Packed Summer

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Besides my bowling league, bowling practices, bike riding, weddings,

far…

  • Quebec City and environs - Canada Day weekend getaway with CL
  • Cherry picking - farewell event for VC
  • Strawberry and raspberry picking - with CL, EL and mom

  • Kayaking - on Grand River with ST and friends.  And I got to drive an RX-8 back :)
  • PDI (a real and a false one :)) + house cleaning
  • Bday dinner and BBQ with CL’s friends
  • MJ’s Bday K party
  • Dinner, movie and poker night at my place with CL, DF, MJ, CC, and IC

And here’re the plans for the coming month…

  • Rogers Cup
  • LOTR
  • Taking wedding photos in Muskoka
  • Weekend party at DF’s place in Waterloo
  • Camping in Bon Echo

I’m particularly looking forward to camping as I haven’t done it in ages!

Broken Things

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Lately I’ve noticed that things have been constantly breaking around me.  First, my 2+ yr old cell phone started acting funny, rebooting itself for no reason from time to time, even during calls.  So I decided to upgrade to the ROKR.  But after not even a week, it’d refuse to show all the menu items such that some functions could not be accessed.  I ended up getting a new replacement phone, which isn’t as good as it sounds since now I don’t know when/if it’ll break like that again.

Next, it was the doorbell at my parents’ place.  It was constantly making a buzzing sound.  I probably wouldn’t have tried to fix it if the buzzing wasn’t so annoying.  I "fixed" it by disconnecting the switch outside the porch screen, which was causing the circuit to close permanently somehow.

About two weeks ago, my bike stalled a couple of times when it came to a stop.  I was lucky and was able to re-start it, with some difficulty.  But 2 weekends ago it finally gave up for good.  I had it towed to a garage to have the carburetor cleaned and sync’ed.  I have not yet got it back.  Luckily the weather hasn’t been that nice for riding these two weeks anyway :)

Last weekend while I was talking on my landline, I heard a loud noise of statics before the call dropped.  Soon after, my house alarm went off.  I looked up the manual to decipher the trouble code, which turned out to be a phone line fault, no surprise.  After a quick look in the basement, I managed to get the phone plug to the alarm working, but not the phone plugs in the rest of the house.  I have yet to look into this, so don’t call me at home :)

A few nights ago after doing laundry in my basement, I went to turn off the light.  It’s one of those cheapie lights with the switch as part of the light fixture, driven by a cord.  Well, when I pulled on the cord to turn off the light, the whole cord came off.  I don’t think it’s fixable, so until I buy a new one, I’ll have to turn it on and off by screwing the lightbulb in and out :)

A couple of days ago after going out to get lunch, I pulled up to the parking lot at work and lazily pulled up my car top without locking the latches, as I usually do.  I’d usually just leave my car top down if it wasn’t for the sweltering heat and the fact that there’s no shade in the parking lot.  What I’d never seen is the top being blown down by the wind, which was what I found when I left work.  This is not so much a problem except for the snapped wire at the end of a small spring that I have noticed in the top.  I still don’t know what this wire is for???

And finally, to top this all off, I myself have become broken last night after eating a bowl of cherries.  I thought that I would be fine by today after spending a couple of long visits in the washroom.  I guess my stomach likes to take its time to recover.

SGP Weeks #9, #10, #11

Week_9Looking at my cumulative averages of the past 5 weeks (hovering between 147 and 149), I may seem to be bowling pretty consistently.  In fact, I’ve gone through a pretty rough slump recently.  Week 9 was rather uneventful, but very good in retrospect.  It was my last good consistent night of league play, which was 2 weeks ago!  I felt ambivalent about the 158 average of that week, but that is the kind of average I would die for now!

Week 10 was the beginning of my big slump.  That week’s average of 143 was the lowest 203that I’ve got in more than a month (since week 5).  The following Sunday I went to practice with DF and MJ, something that we haven’t done in a while because of our busy summer schedules.  The first game I scored my life time 3rd highest score of 203.  Naturally, I agreed to play the following games for money with them and deservedly lost both games with amateurish scores of 123 and 118.  How I never learn!

That same night, after a birthday dinner with 8 of CL’s friends, we all went to WB where I really showed them how it’s done, with a score of 115, barely beating CL’s 100!  That was last Sunday, and tonight I wondered when my slump would end.  Well, it would take one more game, as it turned out. After a rather good practice session, I was extremely frustrated when I scored only 113 in my first game!  But I was not the only cursed one, as DF scored one point lower than me!

Sgp_week_11During the second game, DF started to chat with one member of our opposing team, who nicely offered him some advice.  I listened in and made one adjustment, keeping my elbow tucked in, and amazingly scored a 171, one point lower than DF.  Oh, CL also bought me a bottle of water in this game, so I’ll give her credit for turning my game around too :)  We kept our games going consistently to both score a 173 in the last game, ending up with an average of 152 for the night.

Despite the last two good games, I never felt that I was playing well.  Maybe I was mentally bothered by the disastrous first game.  In any case, I hope that first game was the end of my slump.  And somebody please remind me to never bet when I’m playing well :)
