Trading Down
Thursday, June 21st, 2007For those of you who’ve been reading my blog, you know that I’ve been having a few problems with my last motorcycle. Knowing that I was going to sell it was easy, but knowing what my next purchase should be was not. Earlier this year I’d read about this new bike from driving.ca. It’s a small motorcycle aimed primarily at new riders. It sounded very attractive, but for some reason no info could be found on Honda’s website for the longest time, so I’d pretty much forgotten about it.
Not knowing what I’d trade the bike for, I didn’t want to delay and finally took the time to list my bike online to sell earlier last month after coming back from vacation. Within hours I got 10+ inquiries, and sold the bike within the day. Having sold the bike so quickly (and for more than what I paid for last year) was very good, but it was not what made me so happy. It was in fact the mention of the new CBR125R by the first potential buyer that got my hopes of getting a brand new bike up again! This buyer was in fact considering either buying a used Ninja 250 (my last bike) and a brand new CBR125R, both being in the same price range.

After selling the bike (to a different buyer) I immediately went back on honda.ca to check for more info - and lo and behold, the CBR125R was the first thing that came up. It seemed like the bike would really be coming to Canada. A quick search on GTAM revealed that people had already started putting deposits on the bike. That weekend, CL and I went to Markham Outdoor Power, an exclusive Honda dealership, to look at the bike in person. I was honestly a little bit disappointed as the bike looked a lot skinnier in person than in pictures. We were told that all the red ones from the first shipment were already sold. A couple of blacks and one white were left.
I was quite indecisive, mostly because, like buying a brand new car, re-selling it would probably mean a substantial loss in value. Also, having a top speed of only ~120km/h would mean that I may not be able to commute to work via highways. At the end, CL convinced me that with such popularity, I shouldn’t lose too much money if I didn’t like it and decide to sell it later. With that in mind I put down the deposit on the last white one. Now the hard part is waiting for a month for the bike to come…
